Italian Michael Schumacher wannabes now have a limited edition version of Fiat's baby car Seicento "signed" by the three-time world champ and winner of the weekend's accident-marred Australian Grand Prix.
Well, the car sports stickers featuring the Schumacher logo. It also gets side skirts, chunky rear spoiler and 14-inch alloy wheels shod with wide tyres. Gear ratios have been tweaked, too, presumably to give owners an advantage in the traffic light melee that is most big Italian cities.
The 5,000-only Fiat Seicento Sporting Michael Schumacher - to give it its full name - was given its international launch at the Geneva Motor Show.
Other "go fast" features include leather-clad - with red stitching - steering wheel and gearknob, while the handbrake lever, gearchange surround, pedals and footrest are aluminium.
The car (pictured) is identified by a metal plate bearing a Limited Edition serial number. It doesn't carry quite the same cachet as the plate affixed to Ferrari road cars to celebrate last year's constructors' world championship, but it's a start...
Funnily enough, the engine is unchanged from the 1.1-litre multi-point injection unit fitted to bread-and-butter Seicento (or "600") models. It delivers a maximum 40kW at 5,000rpm and 88Nm at 2,750rpm. Fuel consumption is said to be an impressive 4.7 litres/100km at highway speeds - considerably better than Italy's hero is able to squeeze out of his Ferrari F1 car.
The Schumacher signature model is the latest in Fiat's rework of its big-selling Seicento range, given a significant facelift and general makeover late last year.
Fiat says the model has become even better value for money and in terms of running costs is one of the most economical cars in the world. It also is said to have a high residual value on the second-hand market.
Apart from the Schumacher model, the range includes the Seicento S, SX, Sporting (with the short gear ratios) and the Fiat Seicento Elettra, a car fitted with a three-phase asynchronous electric motor that can deliver up to 30kW (15kW continuous power).
